Petrol in your diesel tank?

Putting petrol in a diesel tank is an extremely common mistake. Often we're very busy, tired people with far too much on our minds, and it's so easy to make a mistake like this. In the UK, over 400 people per day put the wrong fuel in their car, so don't worry – you're not alone!

Draining a petrol tank

Fuel Away can come to your rescue when you've put petrol in your diesel car. We provide fuel recovery in Manchester and fuel recovery in Liverpool, and all surrounding areas. When you call us, we will give you a no obligation quote, depending on various factors such as the make and model of your car, the age of the car, and the fuel system design.

Please avoid starting your car!

Petrol burns at a much higher temperature than diesel, so it will not lubricate the fuel system or the engine in a diesel car and could cause irreparable damage. Even the fumes from the wrong fuel could cause damage to the catalytic converter in the exhaust.

If you're still at the pump, push your car as far away as you can if possible. If not possible, please inform the forecourt staff immediately and they will be able to assist you until our technician arrives.

If you have already started your car, find a safe place and turn off the engine immediately to avoid causing any further damage.

If you have broken down on the side of the road, please exit your vehicle when it is safe to do so and find a safe spot, usually on a grass verge, before phoning us. Your safety is paramount to our company!

How long will it take and how much will it cost?

Our technicians will always strive to be with you within one hour (though lone female drivers will take priority). The fuel recovery process usually takes less than one hour, although it does depend entirely on the fuel system itself.

The cost, again, depends on the fuel system, as well as your car. We will be able to give you a quote when you phone us so that you are fully aware of any costs before any technicians are dispatched.

Unfortunately, most insurance policies will not cover putting the wrong fuel in your car. In some tailored packages, you may find specific clauses in your contract to cover it, but it's not included in most normal insurance policies.

Finally, as part of our service to the environment, all the fuel we recover is disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. We are fully registered with the environmental agency as hazardous materials carriers and producers, and we make sure to keep a records to show the responsible disposal of waste.
